I've never met a dog that didn't enjoy going for a walk. Even a couch potato enjoys a stimulating walk. Like humans, dogs need mental stimulation to keep their minds healthy. The most important thing about dog walking is that a dog who is exercised won't have any pent up energy left. After a healthy and stimulating walk, all they want to do when they get home is relax.
Walking is a special activity that provides dogs with much needed exercise and stimulation to help them stay fit, both in body and mind. Going for a walk allows a dog to explore and learn. A boring day is broken up when their senses are given a chance to investigate smells and sights. How would you like to be cooped up inside your house day after day? Even dogs that have a large pen where they can run and play, need walks to help break up the same old routine.
When a dog is hyper or high strung, it can mean the dog is not getting the proper amount and/or type of exercise. If your dog runs laps around your yard or house, it is an indication that maybe they are not getting enough exercise. A tired or exercised dog, is a well behaved dog. Through regular walking, many behavior issues can begin to be resolved. After a long walk, your dog is in a calm state of mind and is more receptive to training and behavior corrections.
Many dog owners feel that a yard or an outside place for their dogs to play is enough. It is not. To your dog, your yard is nothing more than a large kennel. They must be able to travel over a distance at a continuous pace to get proper exercise.
Walking is the most important part of a dog's health. In the wild, dogs roam for miles every day. That natural instinct to roam is still present in all dogs - even yours. All dogs have different levels of energy, but even dogs with the lowest amount of energy need at least 30 minutes of continuous exercise a day.
Simply walking your dog a few times a week could offer numerous health and social benefits. Benefits include improved cardiovascular fitness, lower blood pressure, stronger muscles and bones and decreased stress. Walking is also important for the dog's health. Obesity in dogs is associated with a number of medical complaints including osteoarthritis, cardiovascular disease, liver disease and insulin resistance.
For the "parents" who would love to walk their dogs, but just can't for one reason or another, I am here for you. And I am here with a smile. This is what I enjoy, because this is what they enjoy. It makes me happy to make them happy (and you happy!). I have learned so much since I've been working and being around dogs. Dogs are great teachers. They have taught me patience, understanding, unconditional love, not to take things personal, to live in the now, and many, many other positive influences. This is what I love, my passion...
